  • Overview

    Schedule and coordinate flow of work. Dispatch tugboats to guide ships entering or leaving port and to tow barges. Select and schedule crews for vessels and barges. Maintains records and prepares bills for services. Notify Captain of tugboat of order changes via telephone or radio. Dispatch crews to tugboats in response to emergency requests from Captain.


    • Schedules and coordinates flow of work based on customer orders, establishes priorities and availability of personnel, equipment and resources.
    • Ensure tugs and barges are properly crewed and operated.
    • Knowledge of oil transportation and marine industry.
    • Knowledge of tug and barge maintenance systems and equipment.
    • Perform inspections of vessels on repair & maintenance standards and procedures.
    • Computer Skills: Word, Excel, Outlook, Web-based schedule.
    • Ability to deal with others using courtesy, tact, and good judgment.
    • Maintain the confidentiality of all sensitive communications.
    • Capable of making decisions and giving directions to facilitate prompt service delivery.
    • Ability to understand and execute complex oral and written instructions.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal or no guidance.
    • Ability to get along with office staff and vessel crew members.
    • Perform in the company Spill Management team as assigned.
    • Assist with general office clean up as necessary.
    • Performs related duties as assigned.


    • 2+ years of increasingly responsible management experience in the maritime industry preferred.
    • 2+ years at sea on tankers or oil barges or equivalent military experience preferred.
    • 2+ years in transportation/logistics management preferred.
    • Four-year college education in Maritime or related studies or equivalent experience.
    • HAZWOPER (including Incident Command System) training within 90 days of being hired.
    • First Aid & CRP training.
    • Valid state driver’s license.

    Job Condition and Environment

    • Required to sit for long periods of time.
    • Infrequent light physical effort required.
    • May be required to occasionally board tugs and barges.
    • Work with computers, fax machines, copiers, telephones.

    Expected Hours of Work

    • Once training is completed scheduled dispatchers work twelve (12) hour shifts on a rotation of four (4) shifts on and four days off. Work two (2) days from 0900 – 2100 and two (2) nights 2100 – 0900.
    • May be required to occasionally answer phone calls or emails after hours.
    • Must have reliable transportation.
